Kirkby Portland Cricket Club

Kirkby Portland is an England & Wales Cricket Board Focus Club within Nottinghamshire and has also achieved ECB Clubmark accreditation. The Club is therefore adjudged by both the England & Wales Cricket Board and Sport England to be a safe, effective and child-friendly organisation. This has resulted in recent years with Sport England granting the bulk of the funds required for the new pavilion and the England & Wales Cricket Board contributing similarly for the fully enclosed cricket nets. This funding was part of the ECB Community Club Development Programme. Kirkby Portland was given the accolade of being one of only three clubs in Nottinghamshire (two hundred clubs throughout the United Kingdom) who was deemed eligible to receive money from this fund.

The Club currently fields three adult sides in the Gunn & Moore South Notts Cricket League on Saturdays and two in the Mansfield & District Cricket League on Sundays. In addition the Club runs two Kwik Cricket teams for the younger members plus junior teams in the Mansfield & District Youth Cricket League for Under 11, Under 12, Under 13 and Under 15 age groups.

Training takes place at Nuncargate each week during the summer and at Kirkby College during the winter for both boys and girls from the age of eight upwards.

The Club has strong links with a number of local schools, both primary & secondary. These schools are visited for coaching,  primarily through the ECB Chance 2 Shine scheme, and school tournaments are also held on Nuncargate during the summer months.

The Club is looking forward positively and is currently wishing to expand by acquiring or renting a second ground within the Kirkby-in-Ashfield area as the Saturday 3rd team plays its home games on the ground of local neighbours Byron Abbey, located in the picturesque grounds of nearby Newstead Abbey. Whilst recognising that suitable land is not easy to come by it remains a serious goal for the continued future growth of cricket in the local area.
Kirkby Portland is a club which believes that cricket should be played seriously but, more importantly, that its members enjoy the game and have fun. Visitors and spectators are always assured of a warm welcome.

Kirkby Portland Cricket Club and the ground that it now owns at Nuncargate both enjoy a wonderful heritage. The Club was formed in 1878 and first played on a farmer’s field near Portland Colliery. They were Notts. Senior League Champions four times and Notts. Senior League Cup winners once in the early part of the last century. The Club has also had a considerable amount of success in recent years in both adult and junior cricket. The ground at Nuncargate was purchased in 1990 from Scottish & Newcastle Brewery after a lease was taken out on it more than ten years earlier. This is the ground where the legendary Harold Larwood first played cricket. The Club’s brick pavilion, which was opened in 2002 by his daughter Enid Todd, is named in honour of this great Notts. and England fast bowler.

Many of the players from the Notts. Golden Years of Cricket came from Kirkby-in-Ashfield. The Club aims to ensure that this heritage is never forgotten and that cricket in this region has a bright future.
